Military Support Group Meeting – May

Hello Everyone,

Our next Military Support Group Meeting is next Thursday, May 10th. Please come on out, bring a friend or family member to see what we are all about. Coffee starts at 6:30pm and Meeting promptly at 7pm. at Chews United Methodist Church, 319 Black Horse Pike, Glendora, NJ 08029. ALL are welcome!

While we send care packages out monthly to our Deployed Troops - We also support our troops at home! This month: We are collecting food stuffs for our Military Families up at Joint Base, Dix/McGuire/Lakehurst – if you are able, please bring out Non-Perishable food items – cereal, baby food, snacks, soups, pasta, pasta sauce, tuna, canned veggies & fruit, juice boxes, etc. Thank you!

Thank you for always supporting & praying for our troops and their families.

Please come out to welcome home 1^st Lt. Frank C. Broomell from his deployment in Afghanistan.

Frank was born in Stratford, NJ and grew up in Sicklerville, NJ.
Frank graduated at the top of his class from St. Augustine Prep School in 2005 and received a Presidential Scholarship to George Washington University.
Frank graduated Cum Laude from George Washington University in 2009.
The summer between his Junior and Senior years of college, he attended OCS (Officer Candidate School) in Quantico, Va.
After graduating GWU, he was sworn in as an Officer in The USMC on July 3, 2009.
Frank attended TBS (The Basic School) in Quantico in 2009.
Frank’s MOS is an Officer.
Frank is now returning from a 7 month deployment in Afghanistan (Camp Leatherneck – Helmand Province).
Grandfather, Alex Mastrando was a Corporal in The U.S. Army and served during the Korean War from 1953 – 1955
Cousin Leonard Nester was a Sgt in the Army National Guard and served during Operation Iraqi Freedom
Mother Anna, Father Frank, Brothers Tom and Jack, and all of Frank’s family eagerly await Frank’s return and hope you are able to join us in the this celebration and make some noise!

Friends, Family, The Warriors Watch, The Yellow Ribbon Club, The New Jersey State Police, The Winslow Township Police Department, The Winslow Township Fire Department, Winslow Township and others will be on hand to make some noise and welcome home this Hero in Rock Star style.

Please come out to welcome home Specialist Jeff Johnson and Specialist John Loberto from their deployments in Afghanistan via a “Mug N Hug*” style welcome home.

*We will congregate outside Dominic’ Tavern’s parking lot waiting for our Heroes and their families to exit and thank them for their service and welcome them home from their recent deployment outside after they finish their meals with some “Mugs N Hugs”.

Specialist Jeff Johnson:

Specialist Jeff Johnson enlisted into the New Jersey Army National Guard in September of 2006 as a high school Junior.
Jeff completed his Basic Training at Fort Jackson, SC between junior and senior year.
After graduating from Timber Creek High School in 2008, Jeff returned to Fort Jackson to complete his Advanced Individual Training.
Jeff volunteered to deploy to Afghanistan after learning that his Battle Buddy from Basic Training was being deployed.
The two had always spoken of deploying together and this was a chance to keep a vow that they made to each other intact.
Jeff currently works full time for the NJARNG as a military technician.
When he is not working, he enjoys working on his two vintage Camaros or deer hunting with his father and friends.
Jeff also is a member of the Lousy Bowlers League in Glassboro, NJ.
When not tinkering with his cars or bowling, Jeff spends most of his time with his fiancé, whom he plans to wed in June of 2014.
Jeff’s father, is also active duty Army and served in Desert Storm (Jeff Sr. will be present Saturday for the Mug N Hug as well)

Specialist John Loberto:

Specialist John Loberto attended Audubon High School and then attended Camden County College.
John completed 1 year and had to withdraw during his second year to deploy.
He is majoring in Criminal Justice and he wants to return to school in the fall to continue his education and earn his degree.
He went into the service to do what he has always dreamed of doing, and that is the Military Police.
John has a goal set to becoming a State Trooper one day.
He likes old cars and currently is working on a ’72 Nova (he is almost has it done).
He enjoys spending time with his family (Mom, Dad and 10 yr old sister)

Friends, Family, The Warriors Watch, The Yellow Ribbon Club, and others will be on hand to make some noise and thank these Heroes in proper fashion after they have returned from their deployments with some “Mugs N Hugs” from us grateful Americans.

Please come out to welcome home Lance Corporal Brandon Lyonsfrom his deployment in Afghanistan.

Brandon signed up and joined the U.S. Marines on his 18th birthday.
He left for boot camp on the very same day he graduated high school.
He went to boot camp at Parris Island where he was with The Mike Company, Platoon 3078.
Brandon went to SOI and was picked up by the 1st Battalion 9th Marines Bravo Co, known as The Walking Dead.
His first deployment was in January of 2010: The 1/9 deployed as part of the 24th Marine Expeditionary force to the Middle East.
The day 24th MEU left, the Marines were diverted to the Island of Haiti which had been struck by a devastating earthquake.
The Marines of the 1/9 provided much needed aid to the Haitian people as part of “Operation Unified Response”.
From there the 24th MEU set out to complete their deployment, training our allies in the Middle East and the Horn of Africa.
In May of 2011, Brandon deployed to Afghanistan.
After 7 months, on Christmas Morning 2011, Brandon and the Marines of Bravo Company came home.
Their actions have forever changed the future for the residents of Afghanistan.
Brandon married his high school sweetheart, Nina MacGlaughlin, on December 27, 2009.
They live in Ranchlands, NC with their three dogs.
As far as plans for the future, Brandon is choosing to reenlist.

Deployed to Iraq in 2009 Mission- EOD (Explosive Ordinance Disposal) 4-Month Tour
Deployed to Afghanistan June 2011 to present- Civil Affairs w/ 3rd Recon.
Volunteer Fireman & EMT in Mount Laurel NJ
Police Officer in Medford and Riverside NJ

VetsFirst Policy Priorities for 2011 Include Services for Vets with Disabilities

Whether acquired during military service or after returning home, a disability affects every aspect of a veteran’s life. Some vets need caretakers to enable them to perform the activities of daily living and to remain productive. Appropriate prosthetic and orthotic devices, the rehabilitative care needed to use them properly, service animals, and prompt health services are often denied to veterans with disabilities due to lack of reliable funding. Those who have developed mesothelioma, the deadly cancer caused by asbestos exposure, need prompt, appropriate medical care and compensation for lost income. Since 1946, VetsFirst has fought for the right of veterans and their families to receive adequate health care and compensation. This year’s policy priorities focus on four areas:

Fostering Community Integration and Independence
Ensuring Timely Access to Quality VA Health Care and Benefits
Recognizing the Sacrifices of Families and Survivors
Promoting the Rights of Veterans with Disabilities within the VA and Worldwide

In order to accomplish these goals, VetsFirst lobbies Congress in support of bills that promote quality health care and access to services for veterans with disabilities. They recently met with staff of key politicians, including Marlin Stutzman of Indiana, who chairs the Subcommittee on Economic Opportunity of the House Veterans’ Affairs Committee; Congressman Jon Runyan of New Jersey, who chairs the Subcommittee on Disability Assistance and Memorial Affairs of the House Veterans’ Affairs Committee; and Congresswoman Ann Marie Buerkle of New York, who chairs the Subcommittee on Health of the House Veterans’ Affairs Committee in Washington DC. They also visited the offices of Senators Chuck Schumer and Kirsten Gillibrand and Congressman Eliot Engel of New York. Both Senator Schumer and Representative Engel are in key positions to minimize cuts to Medicaid, which many post service disabled veterans rely on for medical care. They discussed reform of the VA’s benefits claims process, and passage of the Veterans Equal Treatment for Service Dogs Act. While our veterans’ organizations work tirelessly to secure better medical care funding and access to services for all veterans, individuals can also help. Writing to a Congressman is a very effective tool in this effort and costs very little. The price of a postage stamp and some paper can give every veteran access to a Congressman or Senator eager to please constituents. Hand written letters gain more attention because they cannot be mass-produced. A telephone call is always another option.
